You’re flying out the door with your lunch, laptop and day planner packed and ready to go. You made it again, but like many today, you probably forgot about the most important thing while you scrambled to get out on time. Breakfast! As annoyingly repetitive as this sounds, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. While many feel that simply skipping that morning meal will help them lose weight, it actually has the opposite effect. Keep reading to find out why.
Benefits of Breakfast
Your body has been hibernating all night. That’s as much as 9 hours with zero nutritional intake. Even if you don’t “feel” hungry, your body is desperate need of food to get you moving. Eating breakfast can help kick-start your morning, allowing you to perform the tasks you’ll need to do in your busy day. Just like a car, your body needs fuel in order to operate and peak performance. Without it, you’re in trouble.
Those who don’t eat breakfast often make up for the lost calories at other meals by eating more or indulging in less nutritious foods later in the day. In fact, a recent study conducted by the National Weight Control Registry at the University of Colorado found that those who had lost and maintained at least 30 pounds for at least one year ate breakfast every day.
Outside of simply putting something in your body in the morning, you’ve got to make sure it’s the right foods that are fueling your day. A coffee, sugar loaded cereals and doughnuts may taste great, but offer little to no value paste their flavor. To adequately fuel your body, you need to pick options that contain some protein, a good source of fat, and a moderate amount of carbs.
Your mother, doctor and the countless others who’ve told you, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” were annoying, yes, but they were also right! So if you haven’t listened to them, at least listen to your body and make sure your fueling it with the right foods before you fly out the door. It will make a difference to your day, guaranteed!
