Take a look at this week’s itinerary. Chances are it’s jam-packed with things like grocery shopping, carpool duties, meal-prepping and assorted chores. All necessities for sure, but where is the self-care? What happened to spa appointments, coffee dates, and your passion projects?
The good news is, finding your way back to you is a simple and super-rewarding. Follow these strategies and enjoy the joy in the journey.
Declutter your schedule
What can be removed from your schedule? Of course there are items that are non-negotiable, but are there some that aren’t super necessary and can wait for a time when you’re not so slammed? Now for every item removed, replace it with something that focuses purely on you.
Asking for help is tough, or sometimes it’s just easier to do the task ourselves. However, part of the journey in making time for yourself is recognizing which tasks may require extra help. That’s when leaning on your BFF’s, friends and family come in hand. Is there something on the list your spouse can take care of (hmm, school lunches come to mind)? Maybe it’s time to train the kids for certain chores. After a few tries this strategy will become second nature.
Hire a babysitter
How about this, once a month you hire a babysitter and give yourself the joy of an evening off? It could be for a date night, or just the luxury of free time to spend however you choose.
Learn to say no
Setting boundaries is never easy, especially when it’s followed by an inkling of guilt. The best approach is assertive yet kind. “No, I’m afraid I can’t volunteer at next week’s fundraiser, but with plenty of notice count me in for the next one.”
Connect with your creative side
Even if it’s just a few minutes a day between tasks, or to wind down before bed, try things like journaling, coloring, painting or a nature walk. Erase the chaos and enjoy the calm that comes with it.
